Traveling in Oaxaca is much like other cities in Mexico, there are 3 major ways to get around the city, including; buses, rental cars, and taxis. Transportation in Oaxaca is simple if you know what to expect.
Oaxaca Bus Transportation
Buses can be used to either get to Oaxaca, or to get around the city itself. In order to travel to and from Oaxaca, there are two major bus hubs. The larger of these two stations is a first class ADO terminal, that is located on the Niños Heroes de Chapultepec.
The second station is the Terminal Terrestre. A bus ride from Mexico City to Oaxaca will run anywhere from $25 to $50, and take around six hours.
There are also bus stops and smaller bus stations scattered throughout the city for internal transportation in Oaxaca.
Transportation around Oaxaca by Taxi
Within Oaxaca, most trips have a pre-determined cost. Make sure to find ask your driver up front about the cost of your trip. The airport and many hotels also have common fares posted. Oaxaca Taxi’s also have an extra fee for trips between 10pm and 5 am.
You can also rent taxis by the hour if you choose, but be sure to discuss your travel plans with your driver beforehand. This way you will know what kind of fees might apply up front.
Rental Cars in Oaxaca
Renting a car in Oaxaca can lower downtime drastically on your trip. Instead of waiting for taxis or buses to get around town, you can just drive yourself. Although, it’s important to have the proper documentation, and to be knowledgeable of Mexican traffic laws.
If you decide to rent a car, make sure you have an insurance policy that offers coverage in Mexico, meet the required age of 25+, and that you have a valid drivers license.
